Home » General NewsBlack FridayNovember 19, 2012 Thomas Nelson HSBlack Friday has been around longer than you would expect. It began in the mid 1900s when big companies, such as Macy's, would host huge parades to kick off advertising for the Christmas shopping season. Over time, the advertising decreased as the shopping increased. The term "Black Friday" was then coined, because the sales would go from being "in the red" to "in the black". (Back when finance records were kept by hand, red would indicate a loss and black a gain.) In the 2000s, the event became almost like a holiday to Americans. Stores would open early, some as early as 6 am, and over time have opened earlier and earlier. This year, some stores are even starting their sales on 8pm Thanksgiving evening. There are significant price drops and deals to lure in even more customers, easily making Black Friday the most profitable day in retail of the year. Wherever you shop this year, be sure to get there early before it's too late!!
