Home » General NewsWhy do Americans Watch Football on Thanksgiving?November 19, 2012 By Shelby Enlow of Thomas Nelson HSThanksgiving has become a time where we all sit arount the living room with camping tables and on couches watching a football game. How did a Holiday of giving thanks become a day for rival football teams to compete? It all started in 1876 when Yale and Princeton began the tradition of playing each other on Thanksgiving Day. The NFL soon followed with the Chigago Maroons and Michigan playing games 19 years in a row between 1885 and 1905. This is said to be the begining on Thanksgiving Day Football. Now many High School, College, and Professional teams alike play Thanksgiving games. Plus it is nice to sit, watch football, and just spent time with your family.
