Marching Band

September 4, 2012
Thomas Nelson HS

Spencer Goff, who is the drum major of the marching band, was more than willing to answer our questions we had about the Thomas Nelson marching band. For those who don’t know the drum major is the one who conducts and leads the marching band in their performances. He kindly informed us that the instruments they are allowing in the band are all the brass, wood winds, and percussion including the snare, bass, and symbols.

We were told by Spencer that the goals and hopes for the marching band this year are to get as many members as possible and give as nice as a performance as possible. Next year’s goals and hopes are to become a competitive marching band. We asked if there was a deadline to sign up for marching band; for this year he could only say to please contact Mr. Robinson as soon as possible. The deadline for next year is to sign up by band camp. This year 2012 the TNHS band camp had only 4 marching band members. The past is behind us because now they have at least thirteen members. Although for the time being the marching band is only performing during the half-time at football games.  Then next year they will start trying to be a competitive marching band. When we asked Spencer if there was a particular order the marching band is standing in he said at the moment there isn’t a specific order. Also he added when you’re marching you want to roll your feet so that the sound doesn’t waver. The most important skill you’ll need is: knowing how to march, keeping a stead sound. Another important thing that you need to have are all the LEADER core values especially enthusiasm and discipline. These things will help you go far in the activity of marching band.

Spencer was very cooperative in answering our questions and at the end of the interview he gave us one really good tip. He said, “Always think of the next thing you should do and STAY POSITIVE!” Positivity plays a key role in all activities and sports. He also shared with us a quote that he uses to keep the marching band motivated. That quote would be, “MARCHING BAND!”
