By John Bombatch, Staff Writer Updated 1:06 AM Saturday, August 22, 2009 GERMANTOWN - With both teams switching players in and out throughout Friday's Aug. 21 scrimmage, Valley View and Edgewood both proved one thing to their fans: Both offenses can score from anywhere.
The two varsity teams played two quarters of football at Barker Field, and both teams' quarterbacks played very well.
The Spartans' Kyle Pohl and Edgewood's Drew Bostic combined for 256 yards passing.
Pohl completed 9-of-18 passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns - two to Justin Griffith and one to Zach Cottingim. Pohl was encouraged by most of what he saw on Friday. "It went pretty well tonight, I thought," Pohl said. "We actually had a couple fumbles for turnovers that we didn't need, but the game went really well. We made a lot of improvement over the last scrimmage."
Bostic turned in solid numbers as well. He completed 8-of-10 passes for 131 yards. Two of those completions went to Justin Elder and Kody McCall for touchdowns.
"I'm trying to do whatever I can to help us win," Bostic said. "When we run the ball, I know we can count on our running backs. And I know the team is behind me when we're throwing the ball."
The two-quarter game ended up a 27-20 win for the visiting Cougars. A pair of big-play Edgewood scores proved to be the difference, and Elder had a hand in both of them.
With the score even at 13 apiece, Elder ran 70 yards for one score. On Edgewood's next possession, Elder hauled in a 49-yard pass from Bostic for another TD.
Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said he wasn't too concerned with the defense's play.
"Not at all. We lost 20 starters, so we're still working hard at getting players where they need to be. We'll be all right," he said. Across the way, Edgewood coach Steve Channell said he was happy with the way the Cougars played. "We played a lot of kids tonight, and did a lot of mixing and matching out there but, most importantly, we stayed healthy.
"Overall, I'm very pleased. Very pleased."
Reserves played 10 plays each to start out the night's action, before the varsity teams took over.
The game was the final scrimmage for both teams. Both teams open the regular season Friday. Edgewood will host Withrow, while Valley view hosts Dunbar.
