Colunbia State Chargers 2-0 in NJCAA Nationals!

The Columbia State Chargers entered Wednesday’s NJCAA Nationals Second Round game with one impressive win under their belt, facing the Salt Lake Bruins, in their first contest of the tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The Bruins came out hot in the first half building their lead to 14 over the Chargers, CSCC’s trapping defense resulted in several Salt Lake turnovers as Columbia State cut their advantage to 40-33 at halftime.

The second have was a shoot out as each team traded buckets early, but the Chargers defense would strike again. Bruins turnovers results in scores for CSCC as they cut the lead to 72-67 with 3:00 to play.

As the clock ticked down a TJ Dunans’ basket gave CSCC the lead 78-75 with
:18 left. The Chargers had fought hard late in the first half to cut a 14 point Bruin lead down to 7 at the intermission and whittled away in the second 20:00 to take the lead. But the Bruins had great three-point shooters, one being Gary Patton. With 7.7 seconds to play Patton drilled tray from the left wing to tie the Chargers at 78.

But the #3 Chargers had Arturs Bremers. The sophomore from Latvia was having a great game from the three-point line as he had already knocked down six trays.

The announcers and probably everyone in the gym Wednesday was thinking TJ Dunans. The game before the freshman had 29. With 7.7 left Dunans took the inbounds pass, traveled down the far sidelines, broke toward the basket and threw a cross-court pass to a wide-open Bremers in the corner, who calmly pumped in his 7th three-pointer of the game as timed ran out.


Columbia State erases a 14-point deficit to pull off an enormous victory. The “team” never gave up. The Chargers win 81-78 to advance to the Elite 8.

Arturs Bremers led the way for CSCC with 21 points, all three-pointers. Matt Smith and TJ Dunans each added 18.

Just a game side note…Salt Lake’s first game was against Columbia State. Teams in the tournament with a game played are 5-1.

CSCC will now play Vincennes, a 84-77 winner of Wallace State. The Chargers game will be 6:00 Thursday on NJCAATV.COM.
