Columbia State Gearing Up To Defend TCCAA Title!
January 27, 2013By Greg Bradley of TennesseeSportsNet/WAXO Radio TV
Columbia State Community College Charger baseball squad has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming 2013 TCCAA/NJCAA Junior College season.
Coming off a very successful 2012 season (43-14) the Chargers Head Coach Mike Corn hopes his returning sophomores will pay large dividends this year. Coach Corn, starting his fourth season, won the regular season TCCAA Championship last year. He has an impressive win/loss record of 105-52. The 2012 Chargers won the TCCAA regular season, came in second in the tournament and finished third in the NJCAA East-Central District held in Georgia.
Junior college baseball and softball begins across the state in February. The Chargers travel to Decatur, Alabama to play Calhoun on Feb. 12th at noon. They’ll be back home at Dave Hall Filed Field to face Wallace State Feb. 13 at 1:00. Both are double headers.
There is ONE big change to this years TCCAA Region VII Tournament. In years past all 10 Tennessee Community College teams had a chance to make the field. Not the case this year. Only the TOP 4 teams will advance to post-season play. The Region VII TCCAA Tournament will be held at Volunteer State Friday-Sunday May 3-5. Switching to a weekend only tournament will likely bring in more fans too. This year’s winner will host Georgia in the East-Central Tournament starting May 16th.
Here’s what Coach Corn is saying about this years probable starters…

Starters returning : Position players: 4 Pitchers: 3
Outlook by position:
Infield – We have a very experienced group returning in the infield. All retuning players garnered significant playing time as freshman which should pay dividends this spring.
Catching- This was a question mark heading into the fall after graduating one of the best catchers in the country. However, all four of our young men have improved dramatically and have the ability to lead and perform at a championship level.
Outfield- A young but extremely talented group of dynamic players. All can run, and without a doubt the best throwing outfield we have had at Columbia State.
Pitching- Top to bottom, maybe the most balanced pitching staff of our four years here. We love having the ability to match-up with teams, hitters and situations so the six left-handers on call gives us multiple directions we can go.
Key to success in ’12 – Scoring runs. We did not generate the offense that we expected during our fall games. Our coaching staff believes that all the pieces are in place, but we have yet to really put it together. Depending on what line-up we place out there, we have the ability to have six or seven basestealers in the game which is almost a perfect mix for what we want to do. If we are able to generate a high on base percentage, we will have a chance to be a competitive ball club.
TennesseeSportsNet will carry some of the games this year. Check back periodically for our broadcast schedule.
