Goodlettsville's Run Continues in LLWS!
August 25, 2012By Greg Bradley of TennesseeSportsNet/WAXO Radio TV
The Goodlettsville Little League All-Stars really showed what they are made of Saturday in winning the United States LLWS Title over California 24-16.
In a game that produced a LLWS record with nine RBIs by Tennessee’s Lorenzo Butler on a 3 three-run home run night and 40 runs, it was a game of all games so far in the tournament.
Goodlettsville led 2-1 into the third inning (on a 2-run homer in 1st by Brock Myers) and scored six runs to go up. Three of those runs off the first homer for Butler. Tennessee moved ahead 8-1, but California answered with four runs to cut the lead to three, 8-5.
In the fourth, with two outs Tennessee struck again. Myers, Justin Smith and Cole Carter each singled. Myers scored on Carter’s hit. With two on and two outs Lorenzo Butler worked the pitch full and delivered his second three-run homer giving Tennessee a 12-5 advantage.
Myers retired six batters in the second & fourth innings as the game moved to the sixth with Ryan Lyle taking the mound.
In Tennessee’s sixth Luke Brown reaches on an error. Cole Carter singles followed by Butler’s third three-run homer making the score 15-5. As it turned out the ten run lead was crucial for the Southeast champions.
Petaluma, California didn’t faultier. They plated ten runs sending 12 batters to the dish in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and send it into an extra inning.
While I have followed youth sports for thirty plus years, there’s one thing I have noticed about this Goodlettsville team. They never give up and most importantly they never get down on themselves.
The seventh inning was no different. Tennessee’s Jake Rucker started it all with a single. Jayson Brown followed with his second hit of the game. With two on Brock Myers stepped in and smacked a line-drive off the left field fence driving in Rucker and Brown putting Goodlettsville up 17-15.
Next it was Cole Carter (4-4, 3RBIs,4R). The Tennessee catcher connected for his 4th hit plating Brown and it was 19-15 Tennessee. Butler draws a base-on-balls. Runners would move up a base on a wild pitch and Carter scores on a groundout to second by Ryan Lyle. Tennessee 20, California 15.
With Butler at third Andrew Snyder grounds out to short allowing the speedy Butler to score and Tennessee led 21-15. With two outs in the 7th Jonathan Seals is hit by the pitcher sending the batting order to the top and Rucker. The versatile shortstop/pitcher delivered with a two-out double. Seals scores on the hit and Tennessee moved up 22-15.
Jayson Brown (3-5, HR, 3RBI, 3R) drills a two-run shot making the score 24-15 giving Goodlettsville another larger cushion into the bottom of the inning.
California struck again with a one out double by Danny Marzo scoring Logan Douglas, but that was all as Tennessee’s Luke Brown struck out Bradley Smith to win the over three-hour contest.
