UNCW Signs Lady Charger Basketball Star!
June 13, 2012By Greg Bradley of TennesseeSportsNet/WAXO Radio TV
Highly acclaimed Columbia State freshman Kelva Atkins has signed with the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.
Atkins, from Stem, North Carolina was signed by CSCC former head coach John McGraw and helped turn around the Lady Charger program that went all the way to the TCCAA Region VII Basketball Championship game losing to Walters State. The 5'5" Atkins also put up the numbers. At the end of the 2011-12 season she finished fourth in the NJCAA national rankings in scoring with a 20.6 PPG average. Atkins pumped in 171 field goals, making 34-three-pointers for a total of 474 points.
Kelva was also named NJCAA Player of The Week for her play during the week ending November 13th.
Atkins is an all-around athlete. She played high school sports at Granville Central in Stem, N.C. and excelled in several sports at her school. Checkout this report from WRAL TV.
Atkins was NC Preps Girl's Basketball All-State in 2009, 2010, and 2011. She concluded her high school career with 2,203 points, the best in Granville's history.
She was also All-Region VII while at Columbia State.
The only post-season award that escaped Atkins while at CSCC was an NJCAA All-American selection, which was shocking to a lot of people.
Atkins leaves a program at Columbia State that was on the move upward, but now hits a snag leaving new head coach Bridget Goodnight having to scramble to find a replacement.
