Hutchinson, KS.

The Columbia State Charger basketball team, in their first NJCAA National Tournament in 34 years, got the best from sophomore Masceo Harmon down the stretch to defeat Gordon College, Ga. 72-64 Tuesday in Hutchinson, Kansas. But it's one win and as we know Head Coach Jay Joyner stresses in taking one game at a time. After Wednesday's action the field has been cut to 12.

Harmon hit seven of eight free throws and made a layup with under five minutes to play to help CSCC secure the win. Harmon's play helped Columbia State maintain a five point lead. Harmon had 13 points for the game and directed the CSCC offense like a pro and played 32 minutes.

The Chargers got great play from Greg MaGee. The Clarksville sophomore pumped in fifteen first half points to push Columbia State to a 35-27 lead at the break. MaGee finished with a team high 18 points with 11 rebounds.

The Highlanders opened the second half on a 14-3 run to take the lead 41-38, but the Chargers never let up. Kendall Jennings was crucial under the boards as he kept the ball alive on offense with some big rebounds. Jennings had eight boards. Harmon, James and Bryan Akinkube all had crucial trips to the free throw line with under 2:00 to play. And board play by Jennings was big late as well.

Sophomore Devante James went 3 for 4 from the line late in the game to keep CSCC's lead at eight points. James knocked down 13 and was 2/4 from three-land. Columbia State won its 15th game in a row moving to 24-6. Reigarvius Williams led the Highlanders with 16 points.

CSCC plays again Thursday in the championship bracket. They'll play Region VI champion and # 17 Seward County Community College (25-6) from Liberal, Kansas. The Saints defeated the Lions of Wallace State, Hanceville, Alabama 71-52. Seward County CC is making their 5th appearance at the NJCAA National D1 Mens Basketball Tournament. CONGRATS CHARGERS!!!!!! AND GOOD LUCK! Wish we were there!!!
