FOOTBALL PREVIEW: UNION COUNTY PATRIOTS
July 28, 2014By troy derengowski of Tri-Eastern Conference
It is a new year for the Patriots and they have a new head coach to go with it.
Rusty Hensley is now at the helm of the Union County football program and the first year coach has numerous pieces that could translate into a successful 2014 campaign.
One of the biggest challenge facing the Patriot offense will be finding a quarterback that can fill the void left by the graduation of 2013 All-TEC QB Mitch Snyder. Junior Beau Bryant and Sophomore Matt Snyder are the two front runners to lead the offense in 2014.
The offensive line will give the Pats new quarterback plenty of time to throw with all 6 starters returning. Senior tackle Adam Hundley and junior center Josh Moore will anchor the line as both have three years of starting experience.
Two backs return with plenty of experience for the Patriots. Senior Bryce Fields will be a 3rd year starter at running back who ran for 315 yards and two scores a season ago. Forging a path for Fields will be returning fullback Tex Mitchell, although few carries come Mitchell’s way he has proved to be an effective blocker out of the backfield.
Defensively the Patriots gave up 28 or more points 6 times last season the highest mark coming against TEC opponent Northeastern when Union County allowed the Knights to put 44 points on the scoreboard. Tex Mitchell will lead an experienced linebacking corps who will back an equally experienced defensive line.
