Union County’s young, but talented Patriots took another step toward a possible Tri-Eastern Conference title Thursday night by sweeping Northeastern 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 in a battle of unbeaten conference volleyball teams. In so doing, UC moved to 4-0 in the conference, and 13-6 overall, while the visiting Knights fell to 10-3 and 2-1, respectively. In each game, the score was close for much of the action, but in each instance, the Patriots took control at a key point to win the game. First, strong serving from freshman Bailey Jenkins of Union County helped the Pats pull ahead 14-8 midway through the opening game, and the hosts maintained the advantage to prevail by seven points. Jenkins finished with four ace serves in the match. Next, it was sophomore Chelsea Handley on the service line as UC took control again. The Knights led 18-17, when a side out tied the score at 18 points in the second game. Handley then recorded seven straight service points as the Pats won a second straight game by a score of 25-18. http://www.pal-item.com/article/20120913/HSSPORTS/309130017/Pats-power-way-win?nclick_check=1
