Coach McWhinnie Wins 200!

January 17, 2014
By Tandy Bradford of Toledo Christian

Dave McWhinnie, Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach reaches the 200 career win milestone!

The Toledo Christian Boys team took to the court Tues, January 14 to claim a victory knowing that the win would come with a greater meaning for their team.  The win put their coach at 200-91 for his all-time record.  Although the anticipation for Coach McWhinnie was more about the team being successful, getting past the mark has meant looking back on all the great young men he has coached over those 200 games.  There have also been some great wins along the way too.  Coach McWhinnie looked back on all the games won and really thought beating Ottawa Hills for the 2011 District Final was one of his favorites along the way!  As for all the records…Coach McWhinnie has been named District 7 Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2013 and TAAC Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2013.  He was also the Blade Coach of the Year in 2007.  His teams have reached Elite Eight in 2009, and were District Champions in 2011.  The Toledo Christian Eagles have won 11 straight Sectional titles.  He has had so many great players it would be a long list to mention them all.  However, he has coached 3 TAAC Players of the Year with Kyle Bensch (2006), Ethan Michael, and Eric Cellier.  Ethan Michael, who currently plays for Air Force, was POY in 2007, 2008, and 2009.  He was also 2nd Team All-State.  Eric Cellier, who is currently playing at Taylor University, was POY in 2013 and was 1st Team All-State.  Even with all this on his resume’, Coach McWhinnie has a true heart for the game of basketball and a passion for the development and teaching the young men in his program to be strong leaders in their families, faith, and community.  Toledo Christian will be recognizing Coach McWhinnie at the Friday, January 17, 2014 game when they host TAAC rival Maumee Valley Country Day at 7:30p.m.  The game will be aired LIVE on BCSN.
