Home » Boys' Basketball NewsSpartans pick up another home sweep with wins over Barren Co.December 2, 2011 By Bryan Priddy of South Warren Middle SchoolThursday, Dec. 1 @ SWMS South Warren 52 Barren County 18 (7th) For the 2nd consecutive game, the Spartans got off to a slow start and fell behind 8-7 after the first quarter of play. The 1st quarter was a battle of two players, as the Trojans Chase Dile put up all 8 points (including two 3-pt field goals) and the Spartans Ryder Litten put up 7 of his own. The game was very physical and Coach Young was hit with a technical foul in the 2nd quarter when asking the official to watch for this. This sparked the Spartans team as they went on a 16-2 run in the 2nd quarter to take a 23-10 lead into halftime. The Spartans have outscored their last two opponents in the 2nd quarter by a combined 38 - 4. South Warren would never look back after that and cruised to an easy 52-18 over the visiting Trojans. Ryder Litten led the way with 17 points (including 7 of 10 from the foul line). Eleven different Spartans got in the scoring column, and Spencer Cassady came off the bench to add 7 points, including a 3 pt field goal. The win was the 3rd in a row for South Warren and moved their season record to 6 - 3. The Spartans return to action on Monday, Dec. 5 at home against the Glasgow Scotties. Game time is at 5:30 p.m. SW 7 - 16 - 15 - 14 52 Barren 8 - 2 - 6 - 2 18 SW: Zenobi 2, Litten 17, Smith 4, Haynes 5, Beckham 2, T. Vincent 4, J. Vincent 5, Selimovic 2, Pollard 2, Cassady 7, Afam 2
South Warren 38 Barren Co. 30 (8th) South Warren moved to 5-3 on the season with a 38-30 win over the visiting Barren Co. Trojans. After getting off to a slow start in the 1st quarter, the Spartans took a 16-11 lead into the half, behind the scoring of Griffin Heltsley and Michael Hicks, who each scored six points in the first half. The Trojans would keep it close throughout the second half and poor free throw shooting down the stretch by South Warren kept the game closer than Coach Reed wanted. "We have got to finish teams off when we get those opportunities late in the game", said Coach Reed. The Spartans were 1 of 5 from the line in the 2nd half and 3-7 for the game. Heltsley and Stacker led the Spartans with 10 points each. Heltsley also led with 7 rebounds for South Warren. The Spartans look to stay on the winning track next week when they will host Glasgow on Mon. Dec 5. The 8th grade game will follow after the 7th. Come out and support the Spartans teams.
