The Spartans 8th grade came out and looked sluggish early on against the visiting Raiders from Warren East. The Spartans found themselves down 10-3 in the 1st quarter before finishing the quarter on a 7-2 run to only trail 12-10. South Warren began taking care of the ball and stiffened up on defense as they surged to a 22-14 lead at the half. The Spartans attack was led by Chandler Stephanski and Bryan Cummings who had 7 and 6 points, respectively, in the first half. The Raiders would not go down easily and stormed back to cut the lead to two points in the 3rd period but could never get any closer as South Warren won 40-34. The Spartans missed 5 of 9 free throws in the final period and Coach Reed said he realizes that those are times his team is gonna have to finish the game off. "We made it tougher on ourselves in the end by not being able to increase our lead and put the game out of reach from the foul line, said Reed." Stephanski finished with a team high 15 points and Brandon Stacker came off the bench to get a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The win moved the Spartans to 1-1 and will play in the Barren County Tournament on Saturday, Nov 19th. Games and times will be listed as they become available.

The Spartans dropped another heartbreaker at home Thursday night to visiting Warren East 34-32. South Warren was coming off a tough overtime loss to Bowling Green just a few days before and looked a bit out of sync early on as they fell behind 14 - 7 in the first quarter of play. Coach Young said his team was a step slow on both ends of the floor early on that put his team behind. The Spartans defense picked up in the 2nd quarter and the Spartans were able to hang close and go into halftime only down 19-13, even after playing what Coach Young said was "the worst half they had played this season".
The 2nd half saw the Spartans fall further behind and the Raiders increased their lead to 28-19 going into the final period. Coach Young challenged his team to step up and get back into the game a possession at a time. Down 32-24 with just over 2 minutes to play, the Spartans did just that. The Spartans became aggressive and taking the ball to the basket each possession got them to the free throw line 13 times in the final period. Unfortunately only knocking 5 of those 13 in will be something the Spartans will look back and see the chances that slipped away. Trailing 32-30, the Spartans looked ready to tie or take the lead, when a careless rebound was taken away and put in for an easy layup to give East a 34-30 lead with just 30 seconds left. Ryder Litten drove down to cut the lead to 34-32 with 25 seconds left. The Spartans turned up the defensive pressure but let the time run all the way down to 5 seconds before committing their 6th foul of the half. South Warren called a timeout and after the ball was thrown in bounds, the Spartans weren't able to foul to just 1.7 seconds remaining. Warren East missed the front end of the bonus and after an immediate timeout by SW, Coach Young tried to draw up one last play but wasn't enough time to get off a realistic look. The Spartans were led by Litten's 17 points and Zach Haynes added 4 points and 7 rebounds. South Warren was 10-25 from the free throw line for the game.
The Spartans played hard and will get back to work at practice before playing their next game on Monday, Nov 21 @ Monroe Co. The loss dropped the 7th grade to 3-3 on the season.
