The Gators Hang Tough but the Spartans Prove Too Much
September 19, 2013
The Drakes Creek Gators volleyball teams hosted the South Warren Spartans on Thursday night and were confident they could hand the Spartans their first loss of the season. After all, only a few weeks ago, the Gators took the 7th grade team to three sets before finally losing by only two points. In the highly anticipated rematch, the 7th grade Gators jumped on the Spartans and built an 8-1 lead. The Spartans responded, however, and battled back to tie the score at 15. After trading the next few points, outside hitter Jennifer Brooks went on a service run to help the Spartans to victory 25-20. In the second set, the Gators once again built an early lead at 9-2 before once again allowing the Spartans to close the gap. With the score 24-23, Brooks once again sealed the victory with an ace and South Warren overcame a season-high 25 errors to win the match 25-20, 25-23. The Spartans (16-2, 10-0) were led by Brooks who had 3 kills and 3 aces while middle hitter Leah Palmquist added another 4 kills and middle hitter Ashtyn Vandiver had 2 kills and 3 aces.
In the 8th grade match, the Spartans came out strong and never looked back against the Gators. South Warren (19-0, 10-0) cruised to a big victory 25-7, 25-10 and remained undefeated on the season. The Spartans were led by outside hitter Nina Vespa with 4 kills and 2 aces and middle blocker Hannah Yonts added another 3 kills and 2 aces. South Warren next celebrates “8th Grade Night” at Spartans Arena on Monday night in recognition of the team playing the final home match of their careers for South Warren Middle School. Come out this Monday at 5:30 and show your support of your South Warren volleyball teams. GO SPARTANS!!
