Spartans pick up big football wins over Bazzell
September 20, 2013By Bryan Priddy of South Warren Middle School
The South Warren Middle School football teams picked up two big home conference wins over Bazzell Middle School (Allen Co) on Tuesday night. The football teams moved their season records to 3-1 (7th) and 2-3 (8th). It was a great way to return to action as the Spartans last two scheduled games were cancelled because of severe storms in the area last week. The 8th grade did get their game in last week against Warren East and dropped that contest 14-6.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, Sept 24 when they travel to Bowling Green to take on the Purples. 7th grade will start at 5:30 p.m
7th Grade - South Warren 16 Bazzell 8
Notes from Coach Carter
I believe the 7th grade was a little out of sorts from not playing for a week. It took a little while for us to wake up. All three kids running the ball did a great job. Quarterback Cameron Harrison is really becoming the leader of this team and were complemented by fullback Grayson Perdue and halfback Clayton Bush. Bush scored the first TD with 8.6 seconds left in the 1st quarter. The 2 point conversion was no good.
The 7th Grade defense did another wonderful job led by Pete Cross, Ethan Jones, Mason Graves, and Jacob Lacey, as well as many other Spartans.
Harrison scored the our second TD with 12.8 seconds left in the half. 2 point conversion was no good. Bazzell answered back taking the kickoff back for a TD as the half expired. 2 point conversion was good. Halftime score saw the Spartans leading 14-8.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Bush came up with a huge interception in the fourth quarter. Bazzell was 4th and long and tried a HB pass, Bush stepped in front of the receiver and grabbed the ball. Unable to convert in the red zone, the Spartans turned it over on downs inside the five yard line. This would lead to the final points of the night as Jacob Lacey sacked Bazzell’s QB in the end zone for a safety. Final score SWMS 16 – JBMS 8.
8th Grade - South Warren 22 Bazzell 0
Notes from Coach Carter
Dalton Byrd started the game off taking the opening kickoff to the house. Christian Winn goes in for the 2 point conversion. 8-0 lead. Our defense was fantastic. The 8th grade really came out ready to play. Both QB’s really complemented each other and both threw great balls all night. Cody Eblen and Hunter Evans. Our second score came with 6:46 left in the half when Josh Elliott hauled in a TD pass from Cody Eblen. 2 point conversion was no good. 14-0 halftime score.
Scoreless 3rd quarter.
A bad snap by Bazzell lead to a safety with 7:27 left in the game, as the ball went out of the back of the end zone. 16-0
Winn scored the final points of the night with 1:42 left in the game. 2 point conversion was no good. Christian Winn, Adam Smiley, and Cody Eblen ran the ball great and really executed our offensive game play great.
This was the best our team has played all year. Great TEAM win and I am extremely proud of all of our boys!
