Spartans football even up records at 1-1 with sweep over Drakes Creek
August 30, 2013By Bryan Priddy of South Warren Middle School
The South Warren Spartans football teams bounced back from opening losses to Franklin Simpson by going on the road and picking up two big wins over crosstown rival Drakes Creek.
The 7th grade game was a mismatch from the beginning as South Warren took control of the game early and was up 12-0 in the early moments of the game. Quarterback Cameron Harrison helped lead an offensive attack that the Gators had no answer for. The Spartans took a 34-6 lead into the half and after Harrison scored to give Spartans a 42-6 lead, the running clock started. The Spartans moved on with a 48-14 win and picked up their first win of the season.

DC 6 - 8 14
The 8th grade matchup would prove to be much more of a challenge for the visiting Spartans. Dalton Byrd scored from 28 yards out to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead on the last play of the 1st quarter. Christian Winn would then add to the lead when he scored from 13 yards out. Another missed extra point gave the Spartans a 12-0 with just 3:11 before the half. Drakes Creek would answer right back when they scored from 50 yards out and cut the halftime lead to 12-6. The 2nd half was a defensive battle and the Spartans had to come up with one last stand as the Gators drove the length of the field before being stopped on 4th down inside the SW 10 yard line. The last attempted pass was intercepted by cornerback Colton Embry to preserve the win for SW.

The Spartans moved to 1-1 on the season in both 7th and 8th grade. They will return to action next week when they travel to Monroe Co on Tuesday, Sept 3. The 7th grade game will start at 5:30 p.m. Good luck to the Spartans.
The wins over Drakes Creek made the SW football program 6-2 against the Gators since 2010.
