August 28, 2013By Bryan Priddy of South Warren Middle School
The Drakes Creek Gators entered Spartans Arena ready to end their streak of 34 straight district match wins. The 7th grade Gators came in 2-0 themselves and were poised for a battle on Monday night. In the first set, the Spartans took it to the young Drakes Creek team using service aces and recording a season high .800 kill percentage to power past the Gators easily 25-12. In the second set, South Warren made error after error and hit a season low -.500 in the set allowing the Gators to take a commanding 23-17 lead, but middle hitter Jennifer Brooks used clutch serving to bring the Spartans all the way back to lead 24-23. In the end, the errors were too much to overcome and South Warren lost its first set of the young season 24-26. The third set was a battle of wills, with each team making key digs and serves in an epic battle. In the end, the Spartans prevailed with a 25-12, 24-26, 15-13 victory to remain unbeaten in district play and hand the Gators their first loss. South Warren was led by outside hitter Sophie Pemberton’s 10 aces and 3 kills while middle blocker Leah Palmquist added 4 kills and opposite hitter Layla Jackson recorded 1 kill, 2 aces, and a season high 10 digs.
In the 8th grade match, the Spartans were awake and ready to go after watching the 7th grade game. South Warren jumped on Drakes Creek from the beginning and never let up throughout the match.
