Spartans face a tough challenge but prevail against the Saints
August 22, 2013
Coach Reels knew that no matter how much his team was favored going into a match against the St Joseph Saints, it was going to be a fight. In 3 years, the Saints are the only district opponent to ever beat the Spartans, twice in the district championship, and their gym poses a unique home court advantage with its low ceiling height. In the 7th grade match, the young Spartans showed no sign of nerves and served themselves to an easy victory in the first set 25-6. The second set began with the Saints getting their only lead of the night at 0-1 before the Spartans jumped out again behind strong serving and ball control to defeat the Saints easily 25-6, 25-8. South Warren was led by setter Alex Pardue, with 7 aces and 2 kills, while outside hitter Sophie Pemberton added another 7 aces.
The 8th grade match was a different story. The Spartans seemed uneasy, perhaps remembering the closest victory of last year, which came at this same gym in a nail-biter. The first set saw the Saints hang extremely tough and gain confidence while the Spartans made uncharacteristic errors. With the score tied 17-17, South Warren awoke after a timeout to surge forward and close with an 8-1 run winning 25-18. In the second set, the Spartans came out strong, building a double-digit lead before seeing the Saints make a service run of their own closing to within 5 points at 19-14. Once again, South Warren responded closing with a 6-0 run behind key serving from setter Mary Pitts. The Spartans took the match in straight sets 25-18, 25-14 to remain undefeated on the year. South Warren was paced by Pitts’ 4 aces and 1 kill while outside hitter Nina Vespa and middle blocker Alexa Davis provided 3 kills each. South Warren next hosts the Drakes Creek Gators which matches up 2 undefeated 7th grade teams in a battle for first place. The match is this Monday night starting at 5:30. Come out and show support for your volleyball teams and GO SPARTANS!!!
