The Spartans defeated Drakes 43-34 @ SW on Dec 17th.

Recap of this week's action:

SWMS vs Franklin (Boys)
Jan 10, 2013

The 8th Grade Spartans picked up their 7th win in a row with a 49-33 win over a very athletic Franklin Simpson team. South Warren put the game out of reach in the 4th quarter and holding the visiting Wildcats to one point in the 4th. The Spartans were led by Zach Haynes, who finished with 17 points. The win moved SWMS to 11-3 on the season and they will finish regular season @ Drakes Creek on Monday, Jan 14.

The 7th Grade Spartans continued to struggle and came up short 39-20 against Franklin on Thursday night. Gage Haggerty led the Spartans with 9 points. The loss moved the Spartans to 3-11 on the season.

Coach Reed Comments:

Last night was a great win for the SWMS 8th grade boys basketball team.  Some might have called last night's game a "trap game" after coming off a big win against Moss and playing a really good Drakes Creek team on Monday.  The Spartans played well, while trying out a new defense and running the their zone offense very efficiently.  South Warren had their biggest game of the season when it came to blocked shots as well.  I was ok with the blocks but really like boxing out and rebounding better.  In the fourth quarter the Spartans up the defense and eventually put the game out of reach.  The Spartans would also like to congratulate Tyler Vincent on his first action since fracturing his ankle.  The Spartans finish up the regular season at Drakes Creek on Monday and conference tournaments follow: 7th grade January 19th at Barren County and 8th grade January 16th at Franklin-Simpson.

SWMS @ Franklin (Girls)

Jan 10, 2013

The Lady Spartans picked up two more victories on the road Thursday night with double digit wins at Franklin Simpson. The 7th Grade Spartans had no trouble in moving to 15-1 on the season by defeating the host Wildcats 31-5. Sarah Dennison scored 13 of her game high 16 points in the first half as the Spartans cruised to the easy win. The 8th Grade Spartans didn't have as easy of a time as they struggled offensively early and trailed 13-12 at halftime. The Spartans defense turned up the heat and shut the Wildcats out in the 3rd quarter and moved to a 22-13 advantage, before pulling the 31-19 victory. The Spartans (13-2) were balanced in scoring and led by Deanna Taylor with 10 points. The girls teams will return to action on Monday, Jan 14 against rival Drakes Creek. The games will be at SWMS and 7th grade will tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Manion Comments:

7th grade -We weren't very focused offensively.  We missed a lot of easy shots and lay-ups.  Our defense kept them from scoring so we were able to overcome some offensive mistakes.

8th grade- The first half was same story as 7th - not focused on our shots.  We were getting good looks but shots weren't falling.  We played some good defense but then let up and allowed them to get some easy baskets or we fouled them.  We made some defensive adjustments at half time and offensively we started focusing on our shots in the second half which helped us pull ahead.

Both teams have learned to be more patient on offense so if we don't have a lay-up we will pass the ball several times before taking shots.

SWMS vs Moss 7th Grade Boys
Jan 7, 2013
South Warren was looking for their first win of 2013 and seemed to get off to the start that would be needed to make that happen against the visiting Dragons. The Spartans jumped out to a 13-0 lead before the Dragons began to cut into the lead. SW would still take a 21-12 lead into intermission behind the scoring of Colin Moore, who scored nine points all in the first quarter. The Spartans offense went ice cold in the 3rd period only scoring one field goal but still held a three point lead going into the final quarter. The Spartans battled in the final quarter and looked to close the game out with a 28-25 lead in the final seconds when the Dragons banked in a 25 foot shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. The Spartans trailed 32-31 on the final possession of the game when Eddie Bahic got a good look at a final shot from about 10 feet that rimmed in and out at the buzzer. The Spartans loss dropped them to 3-10 on the season. We are very proud of the effort of these young men and hope they will bounce back with the same effort this Thursday when they are at home against Franklin Simpson.

SWMS vs Moss 8th Grade Boys
The 8th Grade Spartans came into their matchup with unbeaten Moss with a 10-3 record and riding a 5 game winning streak. The Spartans margin of victory was 17 points over the streak.  The Dragons entered the game at 16-0 and knew they would give Coach Reed and the Spartans the truest test of how far this Spartan team has improved to this point.
Early on, the Dragons flexed their muscles and jumped to a 16-11 first quarter advantage behind balanced scoring and two 3-pt field goals. The Spartans shot themselves in the foot early on only making 1 of 8 free throws in the first quarter of play. Coach Reed has talked about how some big games this year would eventually catch up to his team if they don't make a much higher percentage. The Spartans would answer each Dragon run with one of their own and would cut the deficit to 24-21 at the break.
Coach Reed said he knew that if his team stayed close, he felt good of their chances in a close game down the stretch. They came out early in the 3rd quarter and would take their first leads of the game behind the hot hand of Jaxson Smith. Smith scored 7 of his game high 16 points in that 3rd quarter and the Spartans would take a 34-32 lead into the 4th.
South Warren would only score one field goal in the final quarter and would be forced to finish the game off at the line. Although only shooting a woeful 10-28 for the night, the Spartans did hit 7 of 12 in the 4th quarter. All of these free throws came from Zach Haynes and Smith. Haynes would finish with 10 points and have a chance to finish the Dragons off with just 8 seconds to play and a 42-40 lead. After nailing the first free throw, the second shot came off and the Dragons last effort three pointer would come up short.
The 43-40 victory for the Spartans moved SW to 10-3 on the season and gave them their sixth consecutive victory on the season. The Spartans will return to action on Thursday, Jan 10 against Franklin Simpson. Game time will be following 7th grade finish.

SWMS @ Moss 7th Grade Girls
Sarah Dennison and Peyton Ferry combined for 15 of the 17 first quarter points for the Spartans as they cruised to a 17-3 advantage and would never look back as they picked up a 32-13 win over the host Dragons. The Spartans defense caused the Dragons countless problems in finding good shots and they would have no answer as the game went on. One cause of concern for SW could have been the team shooting 7 for 20 from the free throw line for the night. Coach Manion has continued to emphasize the importance of these in tight games that will come down the road. The win moved the Spartans to14-1 on the season and extended their winning streak to 13 games. Congratulations to Coach Stevenson and the Lady Spartans. SW will return to action on Thursday, Jan 10 as they travel to Franklin Simpson. Game will start @ 5:30 p.m

SWMS @ Moss 8th Grade Girls

The 8th Grade Lady Spartans won their sixth game in a row and moved to 12-2 on the season with a 44-13 blowout over the host Moss Dragons. The Spartans wasted no time putting this game out of reach with an explosive 18-4 burst in the first quarter. Sara Ortiz led the Spartans with 8 points in the first quarter of play. A balanced scoring attack saw eight different Spartans get in the scoring column for the night. Coach Manion was pleased with the continued defensive pressure and knows it will take this continued effort to keep on winning as tournament time approaches. Deanna Taylor led the Spartans with 12 points, as Ortiz added 10. Congratulations to Coach Manion and the Spartans. The Lady Spartans return to action when they travel to Franklin Simpson on Thursday, Jan 10. Game time will follow the end of the 7th grade game.
