Spartans Volleyball Teams Make History by Completing Perfect Regular Season
September 27, 2012
On “Spartan Night” where the volleyball teams recognize their departing 8th grade players, South Warren decided to go out in style by setting a district mark that may never be matched. Both the 7th and 8th grade teams defeated the visiting Drakes Creek Gators in straight sets to complete a perfect regular season in district play. The Spartans have not lost a set in district play all season and the 8th grade team has not lost a set in two seasons making them the teams to beat in the upcoming district tournament. In the 7th grade match, the Gators kept the first set close, but, after a Gator timeout, South Warren (19-2, 12-0) began to serve more effectively leading to easy straight set victories 25-13, 25-7. The Spartans were led by outside hitter Nina Vespa and middle hitter Hannah Yonts with 5 service aces each while middle hitter Alexa Davis had 2 kills and 1 ace.
During the “Spartan Night” ceremony between matches, Coach Reels recognized 8th grader and former Spartan player Haley Hancock, who had season ending back surgery in July before bringing out the players and their parents to celebrate the 8th grade players final home match of the season. The 8th grade team has dedicated this season to Hancock and what a great season it has been. In the match, the Spartans wasted no time with the Gators and served and hit their way to a straight set victory 25-12, 25-6. South Warren (20-2, 12-0) was led by setter Lydia Jackson who recorded a rare double-double with 10 aces and 13 assists while outside hitter Brittany Reels added 7 kills and 4 aces.
South Warren will travel to Owensboro for the Burns Volleyball Tournament on Saturday before beginning preparation for a district tournament title run after fall break. Come out and support your volleyball teams as they go for the title!! Way to Go Spartans!!!!!!
