Soccer team finishes season 12-1 after winning championship

September 28, 2012
By Bryan Priddy of South Warren Middle School

The SWMS boys soccer team made history tonight in winning its first conference championship. The Spartans entered the tournament with a 10-1 record and defeated Drakes Creek 5-1 on Saturday to advance to Wednesday night's matchup against Moss.
The Dragons had defeated Bowling Green in the semifinals to advance to the final.  This game would be a rematch from the 4-2 Spartan win back on August 17th in a Franklin Tournament.

No one could predict what was going to come from this night. A huge crowd filled Lovers Lane Soccer Complex to see two amazing teams battle all night. Moss got on the board in the first 5 minutes to take a 1-0 lead on a deep kick from about 35 feet past Spartan Goalie Alex Cohron. The Spartans would answer back in less than a minute with a tying goal by Fahrudin Dervisevic to make it 1-1 with just 8 minutes into the game. After Moss took a 2-1 lead, the Spartans would tie it and the game would be 2-2 at the half.

The Spartans seemed as if they were going to come in the 2nd half and take control when Dervisevic would score for a 3-2 lead. The Dragons answered back with 3 consecutive goals over the next 20 minutes to take a commanding 5-3 lead with just over 7 minutes in regulation. The Spartans would not quit as Nick Drake made an incredible shot over several Dragon defenders to cut the margin to 5-4 with just 5 minutes left. Dervisevic would respond just 2 minutes later to tie the game at 5-5. This is how regulation would end.

The teams went to a 10 minute overtime and 7 minutes into the extra session, it seemed the Spartans were going to go ahead when Dervisevic made a great move around the goalie, who had come out of the scoring area, but he missed an open shot on goal just to the left. The overtime period ended still in a 5-5 tie.

The teams went to penalty kicks to decide this championship and each team made their first 3 kicks. South Warren's first 3 scorers were Nick Drake, Almir Selimovic, and Dervisevic. Carlos Ramos scored for the Spartans to give SW a 4-3 edge.  That's when Cohron came up with a huge stop against the Dragon kicker. This opened the door for Izzy Cano and he would not disappoint the Spartan faithful, giving SWMS the first soccer championship in just three years.
