Home » Baseball NewsVarsity Rams Splits with Lumberton!April 22, 2011 Purnell Swett High SchoolPEMBROKE - Lumberton scored three runs in the top of the 10th to pull away for a 6-3 victory over in-county rival Purnell Swett Thursday night. Justin Leggett and Dakota Hayes started the winning rally with back-to-back singles. Both Leggett and Hayes raced around to score on an infield chopper by Austin McNeil that scooted into shallow right field. Chris Power's double down the right field line plated McNeil with the contest's final run. Lumberton (8-9, 5-5) will be the No. 4 seed in the Southeastern Conference tournament, while Purnell Swett (5-12, 2-8) is currently slated to be the fifth seed. Both squads will play in this weekend's 20th annual Slugfest at Fairmont. The Pirates will open the tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday against West Bladen, while the Rams will face St. Pauls at 4 p.m. Oxendine hurls Swett past Lumberton PEMBROKE - Reigning Robeson County Player of the Year Josey Oxendine limited Lumberton to two hits and struck out 13 to lead Punell Swett to a 6-1 win in a Southeastern Conference contest Thursday night. Danielle Sanchez and Colleen Chavis each had two hits for the Rams. Meagan Skipper recorded two hits and a run batted in for the Pirates. Purnell Swett improves to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the SEC and Scotland by one game in the race for the conference title. Lumberton falls to 7-7, 2-6. Both teams will complete in the Robeson County Slugfest Saturday at Fairmont. The top-seeded Rams will play Red Springs at 1:30 p.m., while the second-seeded Pirates battle the host teamat 6:30 p.m.
