Rams Falls Short vs Pinecrest!

November 4, 2009
Purnell Swett High School

SOUTHERN PINES - Jock Clark's tears ran down his face and fell on his jersey. Time had run out on Purnell Swett and the Rams' chances to win a Southeastern Conference football championship.

Clark was stopped at the goalline as time expired Friday night as the Pinecrest Patriots held on for a 22-20 victory at John W. Williams Athletic Complex.

The Rams completed a 48-yard pass from Chase Armstrong to Ethan Clark down to the 3-yard line with fifthteen seconds left, setting Swett up for a chance at the win. As the players ran to the line of scrimmage, the game clock expired and Clark snapped the ball under center. The referees, at first, signaled the end of the game, but then met near the 30-yard line with Pinecrest coach Chris Metzger and Swett's Mark Heil.

"It's unfortunate when a game is decided by the referees," Heil said. "The referee's hand was on the football when Ethan was trying to snap it. The clock ran out with his hand on the ball."
