Stillman Valley Wrestlers Pin to Win!

February 9, 2011
Stillman Valley High School

Stillman Valley hosted this year's Class 1A Regionals for wrestling with great success.  The Cardinals needed to win the Regional tournament in order to qualify for Team Sectionals.  It was not an easy task since Stillman did not have a full team roster.  However, the Cardinals did what they do best when it comes to tournament wins.  Pin to win!  At 103 Erik Baker starts us off with a .54 sec pin.  That was an excellent way to get the ball rollin' for this team.  At 112 Miah Shearer, 119 Nick Harrison, and 125 JJ Whaley all had byes so we would have to wait for the next round to see them perform.  At 130 Jose Abitua also kept the pins rollin' with a .35 sec pin.  At 135 Travis Hageman unfortunately would face the eventual champion of this bracket right away.  He did an excellent job in the match but would end up getting pinned with 1:35 left in the match. At 140 Talon Paul bounced us back into the pinning mode with a .36 sec pin. At 145 Tad Hawley had a bye so we would have to wait until the next round for him.  At 152 Aaron Johnson got a major decision with 11-1 victory.  At 160 Zach Patterson rolled into a pin for us with 1:01.  At 171 Stillman would have to forfeit this weight.  At 189 Zach Luenberger also shows the fans how the cardinals pin to win with a .13 sec pin.  At 215 Aaron Person also had a tough match to start off with ending in a fall of 4:44.  Pat Cusack at 285 finishes off Stillman's first round with another Cardinal pin of 1:19.  The second round for the Cardinals was full of more pins from 112 Miah Shearer (.36sec), 119 Nick Harrison (.24sec), 140 Talon Paul (3:45), 145 Tad Hawley (1:55), 160 Zach Patterson (2:57).  At 125 JJ Whaley got a tech fall in 3:27, and at 130 Jose Abitua got a major decision of 14-8, this would put all 7 of these talented young men into the finals.  In the wrestle backs 103 Erik Baker worked his way back to the 3rd/4th place matches along with 189 Zach Luenberger, and 285 Pat Cusack.   Going into the finals Stillman Valley was very close to achieving a win for the tournament but Lena Winslow's wrestlers were giving it all they got to bump Stillman out of the spotlight.  However our Stillman Wrestler's continued to do what they do best in order to get the job done.  At 112 Miah Shearer pinned in 1:55 for the championship along with 119 Nick Harrison with a 1:50 pin as well.  At 125 JJ Whaley would continue the wins with a major decision of 17-3.  At 130 Jose Abitua would also get a decision of 5-3.  At 140 Talon Paul would take second, along with 145 Tad Hawley.  At 160 Zach Patterson had a very exciting match going into overtime with a 7-7 score.  Zach got a takedown right away in overtime to get the win 9-7 OT.  In the 3rd/4th place matches 103 Erik Baker and 189 Zach Luenberger would end up with 4th place while 285 Pat Cusack pinned his way to a 3rd place victory with a :57 fall.  Stillman would win their Regional with 186 team points with Lena Winslow close behind with 168 points.  Stillman advances on to Team Sectionals.  They take Five Champions, Two 2nd place, and One 3rd place finisher to the Individual Sectionals.  Individual Sectionals will take place in Oregon on Friday Feb 11th at 4:30pm, and Sat Feb 12th at 10:30am.  Team Sectionals will take place Feb 22nd, in Morrison at 6:00pm.  Great job by all of the wrestlers and coaches; it was a very exciting day for Stillman Valley Wrestling fans!  Go Cardinals!
