Jessica Hoyt: Soccer Player of the Year Class 5A-4A

St. Thomas Aquinas junior

Jessica Hoyt

St. Thomas Aquinas junior

Position: Forward

Season highlights: St. Thomas Aquinas won a second-straight state title in 2012, and Hoyt was the driving force behind the team's balanced and efficient offense. Hoyt's biggest game came in the state semifinals against Cypress Bay, when she scored a hat-trick to defeat the Lightning 4-0.

Comment: Hoyt scored 21 goals this season. Perhaps more impressive was her ability to distribute from the forward position: the junior had 16 assists. Hoyt's extra-time cross from the right flank in the Class 5A state championship game against Oviedo-Hagerty resulted in the winning goal for St. Thomas. The go-to scorer on a team that did not lose in the state of Florida all season, Hoyt played consistently strong throughout the year — a big reason St. Thomas ended the season as the state's top team, despite the fact that the Raiders lost 10 starters from the 2010-2011 state championship squad. St. Thomas still has an outside chance to win its second consecutive national championship.

Athlete's quote: "I'm honored and amazed to receive the award. I used to only imagine getting it, but I know I couldn't have gotten it without my team. I am so proud of what we did this season!"

Coach of the year

Carlos Giron

St. Thomas Aquinas

Comment: The Raiders (27-1-1) won their second consecutive state title, and Giron's steady and calm influence was vital to that success, especially after the team lost All-County goalkeeper Megan Sweeney in the state semifinals. With a first-time starter in net and a 2-1 deficit to Oviedo-Hagerty late in the state title game, Giron made changes to his lineup. That change brought on the tying goal and the overtime winner. "We didn't know where we would be at the start of the season. We knew we'd have a lot of work to do — the girls knew that. We worked really hard to get back to the place we wanted to be. Obviously that work paid off."

Comment: She's heading to Brown, but at St. Thomas Aquinas, Klingmann was the all-vital sweeper for the state champion.
