2013-2014 Season Preview

This season will be a testament to "teamwork," as the Wildcats will rely on more individuals to play a dominant role for the success of this team. This will be an experienced, battle-tested team with a "Blue-Collar" attitude that will be ready to finish what was started by last year’s football team. The Wildcats are returning 6 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense, as well as new additions that have been added to the team. The Seniors: Austin Davis, Blake Fitzgerald, Clint Humphrey, Justin Robinson, Reave Shewmake, and Thomas Stubblefield gives the 2013 Wildcats a solid nucleus to build around as they become the leaders of this season’s football team.

Offensive Strengths: Armed with a veteran offensive line, the Wildcats will use this to its advantage by running the football between the tackles to gain the advantage of its opposition. Competition will be great, as several Wildcats will be partaking in efforts to fill vacant spots, left by last year’s senior class. QB’s Clint Humphrey (Sr.) and Luke Phillips (Jr.) will compete head to head for command of this season’s offense. The Slot Back position will see heavy competition with Dylan Jordan (Soph), Jordan Lipscomb (Jr.), Thomas Stubblefield (Sr.), and Austin Davis (Sr.) all lobbying for starting positions. The feature back, or Full-Back position will have some massive shoes to fill with the absence of 1ST Team All-State, 1st Team All-Region, 1A Back of the Year Finalist, and University of Southern Miss Signee George Payne. Danny Haskell (Jr.), Jeremy Lipscomb (Jr.), Kesonn "Bus" Bettis (Soph), Christian Milligan (Soph) and Chet Hendrix (Jr.) will all have a chance to compete for playing time at this position.

The Air Show: The receiving corp., will be led by Senior wide receiver Blake Fitzgerald, who has emerged as a potential home-run threat, and reliable target for our QB’s. Patrick Lods (Jr.), and Austin Davis (Sr.) will also be consistent in the rotation, as Reed Hardy (Frosh), and Colby Phillips (Frosh) will give the position more depth. The tight end position paid huge dividends as a blocking machine for our running game. The TE has transcended our offense and has helped us become very efficient in how we play. The key players at this position will be Tanner Chastain (Jr.), who has shown flashes as a weapon over the summer, John David Favors (Jr.), who has emerged a physical, blocking machine, and Mathew Inge (Soph), who has the potential to be a complete Tight End by the end of his high school career.

The Offensive Hawgs: The offensive line comes into this year as the most experience group on the team. The offensive line continues to gain tremendous improvement in strength and power, as well as an understanding of the offense. Returning starters, Patrick Martin, (Soph), Reave Shewmake (Sr.), and Matthew Holland will be asked to play more of a leadership role this year. With experienced players such as: Hayden Crigler (Jr.), Harrison Downing, who has emerged as a most improved player, Darrian McMillan (Jr.) and Jospeh Regan (Soph) will assist a group a lineman that has the potential to very good.

The 2013-2014 Defense has also gone through a few changes that should help out this coming season. The Wildcats new base 4-3 look should be ready to take on the heavy-rushing attack that opponents have been using to navigate towards the endzone. The Boys Up Front: Led by Darrian McMillan (Jr.), last year’s week 2 Optimist Club Player of the Week, Graham Rice (Jr.), and Thomas Stubblefield (Sr.), will be asked to bring power, speed, and aggression to opposing offenses. The Wildcats linebacker corp., will take command of the defense led by Hayden Crigler (MLB), Patrick Lods (SLB) and Austin Davis, along with Jordan Lipscomb competing for the rights of the (WLB). No Fly Zone: The secondary of the Wildcats Defense will be led by Blake Fitzgerald (FS), Dyan Jordan (CB), Danny Haskell (CB), and Tanner Chastain (SS).

Coaching Them Up:

Building on last year’s momentum, the coaching staff is eager and ready to take this team to new heights. Jay Beverly, will start his second year campaign with a few pieces in place to have another successful year on the field. He will be asked to not only to manage his players, but also his coaches that are dynamic and creatively skilled in what they bring to this staff. Tyler Smith, in his second year as offensive coordinator will be ready to scheme and put players in the right position to make the plays needed for the Wildcats to be Successful. Coach Smith, coaches the offensive line and will be asked to serve as Assistant Head Coach. Coach Robert Johnson will continue to bring his enthusiastic attitude and NFL experience to help lead our team to victory. His thorough knowledge of the game and enthusiastic bravado commands attention from the Wildcat players. He will be responsible for the TE’s, and DE’s. Bryan (BK) Stanton, will work with the WR’s and DB’s, as he works to get them better and better each day. Coach Wilder is a veteran in the coaching profession with stints at B.C. Rain, Vigor, and Davidson. Coach Wilder will be responsible for coaching the QB’s and DB’s on this year’s team. Coach Jason Phillips will be the new comer to the St. Luke’s Coaching Staff. Coach Phillips will be Defensive Coordinator, coaching the LB’s and RB’s on offense. He brings toughness and leadership to our team and coaching staff. He is an experienced coach, with qualities that you look for in a high-quality, character person.

We are eagerly anticipating the start of the new season, and definitely ready for some football.
