Baseball: St. Luke's sweeps Fruitdale in second-round series

Leighton Lary and Luke Phillips combined for a no-hitter as Class 1A No. 1 St. Luke's won game two of a doubleheader, 12-0, completing a sweep of Fruitdale in an AHSAA second round series.

St. Luke's (30-4) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and added six more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Lary (9-2) got the victory, working four scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Phillips came on to pitch the final two innings, walking no batters and striking out five. Phillips also hit a solo home run to lead off the game.

Brandon Cook led the Wildcats offense, going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Danny Haskell went 3-for-3 with an RBI double for St. Luke's.

Fruitdale's Peyton Brown was the losing pitcher, giving up four runs on seven hits in two innings.

In game one, Cook pitched four scoreless innings while Lary doubled twice in a 10-0 St. Luke's victory.

St. Luke's scored runs in the first four innings en route to an 8-0 lead at the end of five.Jeremiah Jackson had an RBI double in the first inning, Lary doubled in a run in the third and Drew Dismukes doubled in a run in the fourth inning. St. Luke's had seven doubles in the game.

Brown was also the losing pitcher for Fruitdale in game one, working three innings and allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits.

St. Luke's will face the winner of the series between No. 5 Maplesville and Billingsleyin the third round.
