MOBILE, Alabama – St. Luke’s running back George Payne cancelled an official visit to Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend and remains firmly committed to Southern Miss.

“He’s going to be a Golden Eagle,” St. Luke’s coach John Beverly said this afternoon.

Payne committed to USM on Jan. 10 and has been solid since then.

He took official visits to UAB and Southern Miss before cancelling last week’s trip to ULL.

“He’s excited about Southern Miss, and we’re excited for him,” Beverly said. “George has developed a lot of fans here at St. Luke’s. We will have our own Golden Eagle club next year I guess.”

Payne, a finalist for Class 1A Back of the Year, ran for 2,424 yards and 34 touchdowns this season in guiding the Wildcats to the playoffs for the first time.

He is the first Division 1 athletic commitment in St. Luke’s short history.

Additionally St. Luke's looks to have 2-3 other players sign with varying colleges next week on Football's Signing Day February 6th.
