MOBILE, Alabama -- A brief look at some of the top girls' basketball teams in the Mobile area.

Blount Leopards Coach: Jarvis Wilson Class: 6A Record: 22-4 Ranking: No. 4 Top wins: Murphy, UMS-Wright, Newton County (Ga.) Losses: Hoover, Alpharetta (Ga.), McGill-Toolen, Murphy Top players: Cierra Johnson, Whytney Singleton, Laporsche Grissett Coach Wilson's comment: “Our strength has been our guard play with Cierra and Whytney all year. Lately, Laporsche has really come on and she has given us that good third scoring option if teams are really concentrating on the other two. We are small but quick.”

Davidson Warriors Coach: Charlie Shipp Class: 6A Record: 15-6 Ranking: Unranked Top wins: McGill-Toolen (twice), Baker, Vigor (twice) Losses: Murphy (twice), Faith Academy, UMS-Wright, Bob Jones, Opelika Top players: Dejha Shack, Maggie Robinson, Amber Jackson Coach Shipp's comment: “We’ve got good kids. They are academically smart, and they usually play smart on the court. This year, we’ve  been relying on our defense a lot. I guess you could say that would be our strength.”

Faith Academy Rams Coach: Woodie Head Class: 5A Record: 19-4 Ranking: No. 3 Top wins: Murphy, UMS-Wright, Davidson Losses: Murphy, Pine Forest (Fla.), Harrison Central (Miss.), Shades Valley Top players: Jasmine Rhodes, Sidney Westry, Sierra Pittman Coach Head's comment: “Defense is our strength. Jasmine obviously is an outstanding offensive player, but we’ve played great defense in all the big wins we’ve had, holding our opponents under 50 points. If we can do that, we’re in good shape. We also play well as a team. Jasmine is a super star, but this is a well-rounded team that plays well together.”

Murphy Panthers Coach: Fannie King Brown Class: 6A Record: 19-4 Ranking:  No. 6 Top wins: Faith, Blount, McGill-Toolen (twice), Davidson (twice) Losses: Faith, Blount, Desoto (Texas), The Woodlands (Texas) Top players: Tyler Phelion, Vamikka Smith, Devan Cleveland Coach Brown's comment: “Our strength is chemistry. We play well together and, when we are playing well, we score in the paint a lot. We’ve also been known to play good defense.”

St. Luke’s Wildcats Coach: Christine Zoghby Class: 1A Record: 21-1 Ranking:  No. 1 Top wins: Baker, McIntosh (twice), Marengo Loss: UMS-Wright Top players: Jewel Hill, Ashley Chapman, Logan Smith Coach Zoghby's comment: “We’re a lot more mature this year. The first time these kids hit the floor they had a deer in the headlights look. Their body language is completely different this year. They are confident and now experienced.”

UMS-Wright Bulldogs Coach: Terry Canova Class: 4A Record: 19-3 Ranking: No. 2 Top wins: Davidson, St. Luke’s, Clarke County, Opelika Losses: Blount, Faith, Wenonah Top players: Emani Mhoon, Rekha Berry, Carrie Crook Coach Canova's comment: “Our biggest strength is the fact that we’re so balanced. We have a tremendously quick point guard, we have a 6-2 post player that can rebound and can score, we really have some skill at each position. We’re young, but very balanced.”

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH Each of the six coaches was asked who they thought the best girls’ team in Mobile was – not giving consideration to their own team. Three of the six thought it was Murphy.
