St. Luke’s had its first representative at the banquet in Payne, who finished just three points behind 1A Back of the Year Rodney Camp of Phillips. Payne – a Southern Miss commitment -- ran for 2,424 yards and 34 touchdowns as the Wildcats made their first playoff appearance.
“It’s absolutely an honor for George to be here,” St. Luke’s coach John Beverly said. “He represented our school and our community well all year and again here today. He had a great season and this was a great reward for that. He came up short, but there are a lot of great players in this state as you can see. We’re very proud of him.”
