Lady Bulldogs Lean on Defense in Win at De Soto
February 12, 2014St Clair Athletics
Defense was the key for St. Clair in its girls basketball win Monday at De Soto.
The Lady Bulldogs (7-9) shut down De Soto in a 45-25 victory.
“It was a team win. Our defense took the game. It probably was our best defensive effort of the year as a team,” said St. Clair Head Coach Jena Carroll. “Everybody was where they needed to be, helping each other, communicating and rebounding. We held them to single digits in each quarter. De Soto is a good team. I was really pleased with how we came together and handled an aggressive game.”
St. Clair held leads of 14-9 after one quarter, 23-13 at halftime and 27-19 after three quarters.
The Lady Bulldogs put the game away with an 18-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Leading the way for St. Clair was Sam Deason, who scored 21 points.
“Sam had an outstanding performance. It was the best game I have ever seen her play,” Carroll said. “She played the entire game and worked hard at both ends of the court. She was given the task of guarding (Kelsey) Kingland, who is averaging a double-double (points and rebounds) and is De Soto’s top player, and did it perfectly. She only allowed her two field goals all night. On the other end, she did everything right. She hit her outside shot, got to the lane for some inside shots and had several offensive put backs.”
Karissa Hoffman finished the game with 11 points.
“Karissa played with a lot of intensity and did a great job of finishing,” Carroll said.
Allison Hinson netted six points. Kelsey Wachter scored five points. Miranda Murphy had two points.
“Allison and Kelsey worked well handling De Soto’s pressure and knocked down a few key shots when we needed them,” Carroll said.
St. Clair’s junior varsity team defeated De Soto in overtime.
The Lady Bulldogs’ third-place contest at the Hermann Tournament Friday against New Haven was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
St. Clair hosts Sullivan in a boys and girls doubleheader Friday. The varsity girls game starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 7 p.m.
