February 12, 2014St Clair Athletics
St. Clair registered a sixth-place finish in the 16-team field Friday and Saturday at the De Soto Wrestling Tournament.
De Soto won the team title with 537.5 points. Park Hills Central placed second with 381 points and Principia was third with 375.5 points.
Sumner finished fourth with 337.5 points followed by Windsor (318.5), St. Clair (310), Hillsboro (289.5), Hancock (225.5), DeSmet (224), Lutheran South (213), Notre Dame (213), Herculaneum (181), Potosi (153), Normandy (135), North County (119) and Orchard Farm (83).
“Finishing sixth wasn’t bad considering we had four kids not wrestle on Saturday due to not being able to get to school because of the weather,” said St. Clair Head Coach Bryan Watkins. “Because they had weighed in on Friday, their matches counted as forfeits, which cost several team points.”
Leading the Bulldogs was Skyler Hutchison, who reached the finals at 195 pounds and finished second.
Hutchison (26-4) recorded a pair of pins over Principia’s Mitchell Skinner and Park Hills Central’s Brenden Jones. He lost to Herculaneum’s Nicolas Brown in the finals.
“Skyler wrestled well all weekend,” Watkins said.
Chris Algiere placed third at 132 pounds with a 5-1 record. His lone loss came in the semifinals against Hillsboro’s Cody Robertson.
Algiere (17-17) won the third-place match in four overtimes over Principia’s Zeya Kyaw, 7-6.
“Chris had a tremendous weekend,” Watkins said. “He had many close matches and found a way to win them, including a four-overtime victory in the third-place match.”
Finishing in fifth place for the Bulldogs were Thomas Maple and Colton Huddleston.
Maple (22-13) won his fifth-place match at 106 pounds over Park Hills Central’s Todd Boyer.
Huddleston (23-12) posted a 3-2 record with three pins at 285 pounds. He pinned Hancock’s James Heintzmann in 58 seconds in the fifth-place match.
“Colton had a very tough bracket and wrestled well to take fifth place,” Watkins said.
St. Clair’s seventh-place finishers were Lucas Davis (113) and Ethan Koenig (120).
Placing eighth in the tournament were Chase Cohen (138), Austin Nappier (145) and Tyler Trautman (182).
Also competing in the tournament for St. Clair were Zach Long (126), Codie Stroup (152), Noah Cohen (160) and Jarred Dingley (220).
St. Clair split a pair of dual meets Monday at Festus.
The Bulldogs defeated Potosi 60-24 and lost to Festus, 42-39.
Winning by pin against Potosi were Dustin Conner, Algiere, Koenig and Trautman.
Winning contested matches against Festus were Chase Cohen, Davis, Algiere, Conner, Huddleston and Maple.
