January 31, 2014St Clair Athletics
Playing in the opening round of the Hermann Girls Basketball Tournament, fifth-seeded St. Clair registered a 45-38 win Monday over fourth-seeded Chamois.
“We’ve been struggling with our scoring as of late, but we did better in this game,” said St. Clair Head Coach Jena Carroll. “We created better scoring opportunities, took some good shots and got to the free-throw line.”
The Lady Bulldogs (6-8) meet top-seeded Hermann (13-0) in the championship semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Lady Bearcats cruised past eighth-seeded Wright City Monday night, 78-16.
“It will be a big challenge against Hermann, but we’re looking forward to it,” Carroll said. “Hermann is a very solid team. Several different elements about their team make them very good.”
Other first-round results from Monday had second-seeded Owensville defeating seventh-seeded Montgomery County 78-27 and third-seeded New Haven topping sixth-seeded Warrenton, 55-40.
Owensville and New Haven meet in the other championship semifinal contest Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The third-place and championship games are Friday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
Allison Hinson led the Lady Bulldogs against Chamois with 14 points.
Alicia York finished the game with eight points.
Sam Deason and Katelyn Guehne both scored six points.
Karissa Hoffman and Emily Presley both netted four points.
Halley Cokley finished with two points. Miranda Murphy had one point.
“We were down by two points after the first quarter, but outscored them 12-5 in the second quarter to take the lead for good. The second quarter was the key to the game,” Carroll said.
“It was a good all-around effort and something hopefully we can build on.”
