October 24, 2013St Clair Athletics
After playing a scoreless tie during regulation time, St. Clair and Belle went to penalty kicks to decide its soccer match Monday at Belle.
The Bulldogs (6-12) claimed the victory by taking the shootout, 4-3.
“It took seven shooters for us to win,” said St. Clair Head Coach Randy Roy. “It was a tough game. It was very physical and open. It was back and forth.”
Tristan VanSickel played the entire game in goal for St. Clair.
“Tristan saved a penalty kick during regulation,” Roy said. “We also had a penalty kick in regulation that Tanner Wideman had saved by their goalie.”
During the shootout, the Bulldogs received goals from Zach Zollinger, Austin Wells, Camilo Canal and Jeremy Rego.
Roy said the Bulldogs received solid contributions.
“Braydon Roberts played well and had a few chances with one hitting the crossbar. Hunter Richardson also smacked one off the bar in the first half,” Roy said. “Belle kept fighting and had a few chances, but didn’t do anything with them.”
St. Clair played Tuesday against Pacific and Thursday at Sullivan starting at 5 p.m.
The Bulldogs are seeded fourth for the Class 2 District 9 Tournament, which takes place at St. Clair. They play fifth-seeded Sullivan in the opening round Saturday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m
