January 30, 2013St Clair Athletics
Following a first-round loss to Owensville at the Hermann Girls Basketball Tournament, fourth-seeded St. Clair bounced back to claim consolation honors.
The Lady Bulldogs (10-8) ran over sixth-seeded Warrenton last Friday in the consolation contest, 68-25.
“We came out really strong. The girls played great together and did a good job of making offensive decisions,” said St. Clair Head Coach Jena Carroll. “The girls worked hard on defense and did a good job of executing the different things we were trying to do. Every player contributed on both ends of the floor.”
St. Clair held leads of 21-5 after one quarter, 39-11 at halftime and 59-18 after three quarters.
Returning to the lineup and leading the Lady Bulldogs was Karissa Hoffman, who finished with 22 points and five rebounds.
Hoffman was sick and missed the first two games of the tournament.
Sam Deason collected 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Alicia York added 10 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.
Katelyn Guehne registered eight points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Allison Hinson had eight points, six steals, five rebounds and two assists.
Anna Reed collected two points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Halley Cokley had two points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Kayla Klenke contributed three rebounds and two assists.
‘“Karissa had a nice come back after being sick. Sam looked for her shots a little more and was more aggressive offensively,” Carroll said. “Alicia played really well, more to her potential. Katelyn had a great game with three offensive put backs.”
Hannah Sutton led Warrenton (5-13) with nine points. Hanna Keene added six points.
Third-seeded Chamois defeated fifth-seeded Owensville in the championship game, 39-36.
Hailey Diestelkamp scored 16 points for the Dutchgirls.
Top-seeded Hermann took third place over second-seeded New Haven, 47-34.
Jamie Gleeson had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Bearcats. Rachel Steinhoff scored 19 points for the Lady Shamrocks.
St. Clair-De Soto
St. Clair made it three straight wins Monday at home over De Soto, 57-42.
Leading 26-24 at halftime, the Lady Bulldogs broke it open with a 16-5 third-quarter run.
“We had to work through some adjustments defensively before we were able to get settled,” Carroll said. “We shot 80 percent from the line in the fourth quarter to hang on to our lead. We were able to get several kids in off the bench to give them some minutes. It was a good team effort.”
Deason paced the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points. Hoffman added 12 points.
Hinson and York both added eight points. Klenke and Guehne both netted six points.
Alicia Collings scored two points. Miranda Murphy had one point.
“Things really shifted in our favor to start the third quarter,” Carroll said. “Our defensive intensity increased and as a team we got several steals."
