St. Clair crowned two individual wrestling champions and finished sixth out of 14 teams last Friday and Saturday at the De Soto Bob Georger Invitational. The Bulldogs sent three wrestlers to the finals of their respective weight classes and had five place in the top four. “The tournament went pretty well for us. I thought we wrestled really well,” said St. Clair Head Coach Brent Yule. “I keep seeing gradual improvements in our young kids.” Capturing individual championships were Skyler Hutchison at 182 pounds and Matt Gordon at 195 pounds. Hutchison has been solid for the Bulldogs throughout the season. “Skyler did not lose a match,” Yule said. “He really dominated in every match he wrestled over the weekend.” Gordon continued his big season for St. Clair. “Matt wrestled really well. He had a tough bracket that included a couple of top Class 3 wrestlers,” Yule said. “He lost in his pool to the second-ranked kid from Hillsboro. He then wrestled his way into the finals and pinned the sixth-ranked kid, Nick Nichols, from Sikeston.” Chris Algiere reached the 120-pound finals, settling for second-place honors. Advancing to third-place matches and finishing in fourth place were Kris Heembrock (106) and Ethan Koenig (113). De Soto won the tournament crown with 279.5 points. Sikeston finished second with 232.5 points. Herculaneum was third with 173.5 points. Rounding out the top 10 teams in the standings were Windsor (166), Cape Notre Dame (153.5), St. Clair (144.5), Hillsboro (134.5), Park Hills Central (95.5), DeSmet (88.5) and Hancock (76.5).
