St. Clair picked up a much-needed win going into next week’s district boys basketball tournament. The Bulldogs (8-17, 2-4) turned in another solid defensive effort, locking down Owensville in a 47-25 Four Rivers Conference win Tuesday at Owensville High School. The win completed a St. Clair varsity sweep Tuesday as the girls knocked off Owensville 88-81 in double overtime prior to the boys contest. St. Clair snapped a five-game boys losing streak with the win over the Dutchmen (1-22, 0-6). “Our defense was good,” said St. Clair Head Coach Greg Dunigan. “Offensively, we attacked the basket better and got to the free-throw line more than normal.” The Bulldogs held the advantage over the Dutchmen throughout the contest, leading 8-4 after one quarter, 20-9 at halftime and 32-19 after three quarters. St. Clair put the game away with a 15-6 run in the fourth quarter. “We ran the floor and got the tempo up in the second half to get some easy baskets,” Dunigan said. Neyko Dominguez led St. Clair in the scoring column with 19 points. He was 5-6 from the free-throw line. Ben Feddersen gave the Bulldogs a lift by scoring eight points. Will Rolley finished the contest with seven points. Austin Gotway chipped in with six points. Adam Brott scored five points. Justin Nunn had two points. Evan Murphy, Evan Powell and Reno Jones also played for St. Clair. The Bulldogs attempted 21 free throws, knocking down 12 of them. They hit three three-pointers, two by Dominguez and one by Gotway. St. Clair also won the junior varsity game over Owensville, 45-38. The regular season ended Friday with St. Clair playing Sullivan and Owensville meeting Union. St. Clair and Owensville both play in the Class 4 District 9 Tournament next week at Union High School. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs take on fourth-seeded Union Tuesday at 6 p.m. The sixth-seeded Dutchmen play third-seeded Salem Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The championship game runs Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the St. Clair-Union game plays top-seeded Borgia in the semifinals Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. St. Clair defeated Union in the two teams’ only meeting this season Dec. 13 at St. Clair, 51-39. That was the game where Brandon York of the Bulldogs suffered a broken wrist and was lost for the remainder of the season.
