January 26, 2012St Clair Athletics
Competing last Friday and Saturday at the Eric Lewis Invitational at MICDS, St. Clair’s wrestlers had three places in the championship bracket and three more in the consolation bracket.
The Bulldogs finished in 14th place out of 19 teams with 59 points.
McCluer North claimed the team title with 222 points. Holt finished second with 200. Rounding out the top five were Whitfield with 178.5, Rockwood Summit with 168 and Ladue with 133.
The remainder of the team standings were St. Charles (110.5), Pacific (106), SLUH (91), Westminster (89), Ritenour (81), Parkway North (80), Hazelwood West (75), De Soto (64), St. Clair (59), MICDS (56), Principia (54), Chaminade (53), Union (50) and John Burroughs (37.5).
“We competed well as a team,” said St. Clair Head Coach Mark Payne. “It’s a tough tournament and most of us came out with at least one win.”
Leading St. Clair was Dakota Bush, who reached the championship match at 195 pounds and finished second.
Bush lost a 7-4 decision to Rockwood Summit’s Rudy May in the finals. Bush now stands with a 34-2 record.
“Dakota got to the finals and made the match very close,” Payne said. “He’s come a long way in four years. I’m very proud of him.”
Mike Wright (220) earned a third-place finish in the championship bracket.
Wright, ranked No. 1 in Class 2 at 220 pounds, pinned Hazelwood West’s Brett lantz in 1:27 in the third-place match to improve to 36-2 on the season.
“Mikey finished the tournament with four pins and was in a pretty tough bracket,” Payne said. “He continues to do well.”
Dustin Conner (152) placed seventh in the championship bracket. He pinned Union’s Cody Pace in 3:03 in the seventh-place match to move to 30-9 on the season.
“Dustin wrestled extremely well. His placing doesn’t reflect his performance very well. He was in maybe the deepest bracket and beat the No. 3 seed, which knocked that wrestler out of the tournament,” Payne said. “Dustin is a returning state qualifier and had to face the No. 1 seed in the first round. He also pinned a very tough kid from Union in his last match.”
St. Clair had three wrestlers place in the consolation bracket.
Chris Algiere (106) notched a first-place finish on the consolation side, which was ninth overall.
“Chris had a great tournament. He continues to get better every time he wrestles,” Payne said. “He’s been able to absorb the information he’s learned this year and immediately put it into competition. He beat a wrestler that he lost to last Wednesday.”
Wallie Mesey (113) and Jesse Sheldon (132) both had second-place finishes on the consolation side.
Other St. Clair wrestlers in the tournament were Chase Cohen (120), Austin Koenig (126), Jonah Pfeiffer (138), Hayden Norton (145), Austin Pelton (160) and Jake Calkins (170).
