Freshmen Lady Pirates earn Third Place in GACs!
February 2, 2013By Jim Scott of St. Charles Girls Basketball
The Freshmen Lady Pirates end their 2012-2013 season with a great win over St. Charles West. The GAC tournament began well on Tuesday with the Pirates advancing in the winners bracket of the tournament with a victory over a talented Washington team 32-23. The Pirates took a 19-10 lead into halftime in the game. Washington came out in the third quarter and stormed back leaving the Pirates up 21-19 going into the final quarter. Clutch free-throw shooting allowed the Pirates to narrowly escape with the victory in the end. That set up a matchup with Fort Zumwalt East, a team the Pirates were 2-0 against in the regular season. The old adage of it being difficult to beat the same team three times came to fruition. Unfortunately, the Pirates could only muster 5 points in the second half and lost 16-20 in a defensive battle. FZE cranked up the defense in the second half and frustrated the Pirates offensive attack. That set up the third place matchup with SCW. The stagnant offense from a day ago made a 180. The Pirates exploded with 44 points and great FT shooting to avenge two losses at the hands of SCW in the regular season. The Pirates topped the Warriors 44-38, to earn 3rd Place in the GAC tournament. Thanks to all the parents, players, and coaches for making this an enjoyable, successful, and fun-filled season. The Pirates finished the 2012-2013 campaign 12-8. A special thanks to Coach Bichel who was a great help all season and an important part of this season's success.
