Seniors Shine in Last Home Game
April 21, 2014Splendora High School
SPLENDORA Tx - A beautiful day for baseball turned into a night to be remembered for 10 outgoing Splendora Wildcat Seniors. The Seniors were honored during a pre game ceremony for their service to the Baseball program of Splendora High School. All 10 senior Wildcat Baseball Players started in the game.
After the starting lineups were announced by P.A. man Coach Randy Pope and a fantastic National Anthem by Splendora student Savannah Elliot, the Wildcat seniors were ready to play some baseball.
Left Fielder Casey Barron (3 yr starter) had the best home game of his career. Barron went 3-3 with 3 RBI at the plate, had a SAC fly to left, and ended the game with a perfect bullet to the plate to hose Liberty's Andrew Fregia, who was trying to score from 2nd base.
The Wildcats started the scoring in the 1st when Centerfielder Aaron Smalley smashed a triple off the fence in right field. Smalley would score quickly on a single to left by the 'Cats Ty Nixon. The Wildcats added another run on a Barron single.
Splendora would add a run in the 2nd when catcher Matt Adams walked, stole second and scored on a Smalley double in the right-center field gap.
Liberty got on the board in the 3rd when starting pitcher Josh Mendez issued free passes to the first two Panther and threw the ball away trying to nip the runner at 3rd on a sacrifcie bunt attempt by Panther leadoff hitter Pierce. That was about the only hiccup Mendez would have as Josh struck out 6 hitters in picking up the win on the mound for the Wildcats. Wildcat 1st baseman Brandon Wilson would cut down Liberty's Nolan trying to go to 3rd base during the inning. Splendora would score in the 3rd as well on a Matt Jacquinot single and a SAC fly to left by Barron.
The 4th inning saw 2 more Wildcat runs score when Connor Phillips walked, stole second then scored on a Ty Nixon single. Nixon's single also scored Smalley who had beat out an infield single. Smalley would add to his stolen base career toatal, stealing his 56th base of his HS career.
In the 5th, after Kolby Reed flew out to right field, the 'Cats ripped 3 straight singles with Jacquinot, Barron and Brandon Wilson doing the damage. A sacrificd fly to right center field off Brousard (Tarp) by Justin Ward would plate Barron. Liberty added a run in the 5th.
In Splendora's last at bat of the contest in the 6th inning, Phillips again led off with a walk. After a Smalley out, Nixon once again delivered a RBI single up the middle to score Phillips.
It was a tremendous way to send off the Wildcat seniors as all 10 contributed largely in the Wildcat 10-2 victory. These seniors have worked extremely hard and it paid off in a huge way this Friday night. The Wildcats are now 17-4 on the season and sit atop the District 22-3A standings with Huffman at 9-1. The Wildcats have assured themselves of a playoff appearance for 2014. The 'Cats travel to Cleveland on Tuesday to face the Indians. Game time is 7:00...Bang-Bang.
