SPLENDORA 10, TARKINGTON 4
April 9, 2014Splendora High School
CLEVELAND, Tx - Splendora used a very strong pitching performance by Junior Justin Reid to defeat the Tarkington Longhorns by a score of 10-4 before a solemn crowd at Longhorn Field.
Splendora scored one in the top of the 1st inning when Aaron Smalley walked, stole 2nd base and trotted home on a Matt Jacquinot base hit. In the bottom of the 2nd, Tarkington would tie up the score as Splendora had an errant throw from 3rd base to allow Trey McLawchilin to reach second base. After Reid struck out centerfielder Johnson, Grudzinski singled up the middle.
Splendora would score 5 runs in the 3rd inning. Smalley lead off with another walk. First baseman Dave Rauch singled to left. Kolby Reed walked. Jacquinot came through again with another single to right for 2 RBI. A couple of passed balls and the Wildcats led 6-1. In the bottom half of the 3rd, Reid would strike out the side of LeJeune, Greenland and Evans.
The 'Cats failed to score in the top of the 4th and Tarkington would counter with 2 runs on 3 hits to close the gap to 6-3. Both teams were held scoreless in the 5th inning. Tarkington would score in the 6th on an error, a stolen base and a wild pitch. Reid struck out 4 hitters in the inning (1 would reach on the dropped 3rd strike rule).
Just as the game got tight, the Wildcats went to work in the top of the 7th. Rightfielder Reed flied out to center field to leadoff. Jacquinot would reach on a shortstop error. After Ty Nixon would pop out to 1st base for the 2nd out, Kam Levis blooped a single up the middle. Pitcher Reid stepped in and walloped a shot over centerfielder Johnson's head, which landed at the base of the wall for a 2-run double and a Wildcat 8-4 lead. Splendora would plate 2 more runs on a couple of base-on-balls and some crafty basepath work...all with 2 outs.
Through the first 6 innings, Reid struck out 15 Longhorn hitters. In the 7th, after giving up a leadoff single, Reid retired the next 3 batters to preserve the victory for Splendora. The 'Cats are now 16-3 on the season and 8-0 in District 22-3A competition, and will host the Huffman Falcons (14-4 & 7-1) in a battle for 1st place (which Splendora currently holds) on Tuesday, April 15th.
In other District 22-3A action, Huffman holds off Shepherd, 2-0 & Coldspring needed 9 innings to defeat Liberty, 9-8. Cleveland had the night off.
The Wildcat JV beat Tarkington by a run. Pitchers, Grant Shuf and Ryan Roebuck combined for the win, while centerfielder Toby Clark threw a bullet to hose a Longhorn runner attempting to tag up at second base and move to third base on a fly ball to right-centerfield. The JV 'Cats have 1 loss in District play.
