'Cats Tame Pirates 5-0
April 7, 2014Splendora High School
SPLENDORA, Tx - The Splendora Wildcats knew that Shepherd's 6'5" Tyler Kolek was going to bring the heat...and he did - 101 mph to be exact. However, the Wildcats won round #1 vs Shepherd by scoring the only run they would need in the first inning.
Leadof hitter Connor Phillips (clap, clap, clap, clap, clap) started things right for the Wildcats by slapping a base hit to left field. Phillips promptly stole second base. After an Aaron Smalley out, 1st baseman Dave Rauch flied out to left field. With 2 outs, in stepped Wildcat cleanup hitter Kolby Reed. Reed delivered an RBI single up the middle, just falling out of the outstretched glove of Shepherd shortstop Steven Kolek. Splendora would lead 1-0.
Meanwhile, pitcher Matt Jacquinot (7-0) silenced the Pirate bats with good control, allowing no base on balls and yielding only 4 hits. Jacquinot fanned 11 Pirate hitters. The Wildcat defense, after an error by the third baseman to begin the botom of the 1st, played solid, including a 4U-3 double play turned in by Phillips and Rauch.
Splendora would tack on 2 runs in the 4th and 1 more in the 5th with some heads up play and good base running. The Wildcats would strike out 13 times on the night in front of 20+ scouts from various Major League Baseball Clubs (including Astro's Reid Ryan), who were gunning/charting Kolek's pitches. Jacquinot and Ty Nixon would pick up the other Wildcat hits on the evening.
Splendora is now 15-3 on the year and 7-0 in District play, while Shepherd falls to 4-3 in District 22-3A. Splendora travels to Tarkington to face the Longhorns in a 7:00pm game on Tuesday, April 8.
