March 22, 2014Splendora High School
LIBERTY, Tx - Senior pitcher Matt Adams improves to 3-0 on the season, hurling a 3 hit gem, as the Splendora Wildcats escape the Panthers of Liberty, 2-0 on Friday night.
Adams was in control the whole evening, until the 7th inning, when, with 2 outs, second baseman Michael Williams lined a single to left and 9-hole hitter John Brown (HBP, HBP,BB) walked. But with runners at the corners, leadoff hitter Jay Pierce curiously bunted. Adams fielded it and fired to 1st baseman Justin Reid and the game ended 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats from Splendora.
The Wildcats scored in the 1st. Leadoff hitter Aaron Smalley walked. After a Connor Phillips fielder's choice, Dave Rauch hit a bullet to to right-center field for a double. Sr Ty Nixon followed with a RBI single and the 'Cats led, 1-0.
The teams traded zeros until the 6th, when Phillips reached on an error. After a muffed pickoff attempt in which Phillips raced all the way to 3rd base, the 'Cats Nixon again delivered with a sacrifice RBI to center field to score Phillips. The Wildcats had a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. Nixon also mad fine defensive plays at 3rd base during the nightcap game.
Adams made it look easy, getting the first two outs of the inning, before things got a little nervous.
Outfielders, Casey Barron, Aaron Smalley and Kolby Reed did a fine job on defense for Splendora as did Sr Shortstop, Matt Jacquinot, who went deep in the hole to his right and fired a missle to throw out the Panther's Jeremy Anderson for the third out in the 4th inning.
Splendora holds on to first place in District 22-3A with the win and improves to 4-0. In other 22-3A action, Cleveland slipped past Tarkington, 10-9 and Shepherd beat Coldspring, 8-1.
The Wildcat JV dropped a 5-4 decision to Liberty, after leading for most of the game. Starting pitcher, Blaine Bowers held the Panthers scoreless before tiring and 2nd baseman Wyatt Hansen and 3rd baseman Matt Shem had big hits for the 'Cats JV. The loss is the first in District for the Wildcat JV.
Splendora has 2 home games next week as they host Cleveland on Tuesday and Coldspring on Friday.
