Splendora 5 Houston Aldine 4

March 3, 2014
Splendora High School

NEW CANEY, Tx -  The Splendora Wildcats smoked the baseball in the first inning, coasted, then held on late to notch a 5-4 win over Aldine.

Aaron Smalley led off the game with a triple to right.  After a Connor Phillips fly out to left, first baseman Dave Rauch stepped in and smacked a 2 run home run to right field.  Kolby Reed walked, stole second and Ty Nixon ripped a double to plate Reed.  After one ining of play, the 'Cats led 3-0.

Then the bats fell silent.  Aldine pitcher Oscar Lazaro found his rythm, coersing Wildcat hitters into 15 fly ball outs, while striking out 1.  Lazaro threw 2 ground ball outs.

In the bottom of the 5th, Diego Prieto singled, stole second and scored on a Phillips RBI.

In the 6th, Aldine scratched out 2 runs on a couple of hit batsmen, a single and a double, as Sr outfielder Smalley's dive for a line drive just missed his mitt.

Things got tight in the 7th inning.   Freshman pitcher Kam Levis (1-0), started the inning getting Fabian Vasquez to fly out to Cole Jenkins in right.  Levis then struck out Anthony Espinoza.  Justin Ward entered the game and gave up a single to Lazaro, then walked Mike Cuellar.  Coach Koesel then summoned shortstop Prieto to the bump.

Prieto gave up a single on his first pitch and Aldine pulled to 5-3.  An error by Splendora's second baseman and the game was now 5-4 in favor of the 'Cats.  Prieto issued a walk to load the bases before his fastball to Robert Procopio landed safely in the glove of rightfielder Jenkins to preserve the win for Splendora.

Sr righty Matt Adams started and went 2 innings, allowing no runs, throwing 20 strikes in 28 pitches.  Kam Levis, who picked up the win, threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out 4.

Splendora is now 5-2 on the season and open District 22-3A play at home on Tuesday, March 4 versus Coldspring.
