Splendora Defeats Crosby

New Caney, Tx -  The Splendora Wildcats jumped to an early lead and then held on for an 8-5 victory over the Crosby Cougars in the first round of the Don Newcomb/New Caney Baseball Tournament.

    Aaron Smalley led off the bottom of the 1st with a single to centerfield.  Smalley then stole 2nd.  Connor Phillips, batting in the second position, singled to right.  With runners at 2nd and 3rd and no outs, third baseman, Ty Nixon hit a gound ball to Crosby 2nd baseman O. Quintana for out number one. 1st baseman Dave Rauch stepped in the box and delivered a 2 RBI single to centerfield.  The 'Cats led 2-0 after one inning.

     Both teams were held scorless until the 4th inning.  Crosby tied the game in the top of the 4th inning when M. Sequera reached on a Wildcat error.  After a groundout to 3rd, R. Martinez hit a single up the middle.  C. Watley was hit by a Matt Jacquinot offering and the bases were loaded with 1 out.  Steve Burgeron laced a single to left to score Sequera.  J. Sparks then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score another Cougar run. 

     In the bottom half of the 4th, Splendora scored 3 times on a single by Casey Barron, a Diego Prieto walk, a Smalley single and a 2 RBI triple by Phillips.  The 'Cats scored a run in the 5th, as pinch hitter Justin Reid scored runner TJ Wilson.  Splendora added 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th with a double by Nixon, 2 Cougar errors and a RBI single by Jacquinot.

      Leading 8-2 entering the 7th, Crosby made a game of it, scoring 3 runs on 1 hit, a hit batsman, a Wildcat error  and 2 base on balls.  Josh Mendez was summoned for pitcher Jacquinot (2-0) to close the deal.  Mendez got Riffle to end the game on a strikeout. 

     The Wildcats (4-0) face Porter and New Caney today @ 3:00 pm & 7:00 pm.
