Week #1 of district 37-4A play

On Thursday, January 30th the Wildcat Varsity traveled to Liberty to take on the Liberty Panthers in the opening game of district play. The Wildcats struck first with direct kick score from Luis Garcia into the face of the wind in the 1st half. Chris Melendez would increase the margin to 2-0 with an indirect score in the second half. Saul Soria turned in the clean sheet for the Wildcats. Final: Wildcats 2, Panthers 0.
On Friday the Cats hosted the Lumberton Raiders for the first home game in district play. The Wildcat JV team kicked things off with an inspired effort in a 3-1 victory over the Raiders. Jonathan Rodriguez and Yeudiel Santos each scored to give the Wildcats a 2-0 halftime advantage. Lumberton cut the score to 2-1 until Rodriguez scored again to give the lead for good. Jermiah Johnson, Brandon Duke, Gabriel Sanches, Andres Garcia and goalkeeper Daniel Moreno anchored a tough Wildcat defensive effort. Midfielders Ray Lopez, Jaret Acevado and Silverio Mendoza kept the Wildcats passing game in the attacking mode all evening.
In the night cap the Wildcat Varsity took to the pitch. The Cats opted to play into a stiff wind in the 1st half in order to have the advantage in the 2nd half. Lumberton struck first with a wind aided goal on an unlucky bounce. The half ended with Lumberton up 1-0. The 2nd half began with the Cats passing game clicking and the Wildcats taking control of the game. Luis Garcia drew the Wildcats even with a goal mid way through the 2nd half. With the defense, consisting of: GK Saul Soria, Abe Lopez, Gabriel Laura, Josue Santos and Senior Stopper Christian Acosta, scratching and clawing kept the backend tidy so that the Cats could remain in the attacking mode. Chris Melendez found the back of the net with 15 minutes remaing to give the home team a 2-1 lead. Midfielders Ramiro Ortuno, Luis Garcia, Jose Zepeda and Eric Serrano kept pressing forward with spirited play tough play. Zepeda added the 3rd goal of the half with 8 minutes remaing that sealed the come from behind victory for the Wildcats. Striker Julio Hernandez wsa a presence all evening with his passing game. After the first week the Cats are 2-0-0 in district play. Week 2 begans next week with the Wildcats traveling to Hardin-Jefferson on Tuesday and hosting Jasper this Friday. Go Wildcats!!!
