Up and Down Week in Soccer

January 18, 2014
By Jeff McGuire of Splendora High School

The LadyCat Soccer team hosted the Diboll LadyJacks on Tuesday night. The JV team fell to Diboll 1-0 while the varsity held the LadyJacks to a 0-0 draw. Sophomore Ana Zepeda came close to putting in the winning goal on a beautiful crossing pass by sophomore captain Sam Rouse. Unfortunately, the shot went wide of goal as did the LadyCats' chances for the evening.

On Friday and Saturday this weekend, the LadyCats traveled to nearby Porter to play in the Porter Round-Robin. The host Porter Lady Pirates took no mercy on the LadyCats in the first match jumping out to an 8-0 win. Fortunately, the LadyCats regained their footing in the late match by tying district foe Liberty 1-1. Sam Rouse scored the goal for the LadyCats. In the Saturday closer, the Channelview Lady Falcons bested the LadyCats by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Paola Ramos scored off a nice pass assist from Ana Zepeda. The LadyCat record now stands at 2-2-3 as they prepare to face Caney Creek and Diboll once again before beginning district play on January 28th when they will host the Liberty Lady Panthers.

"These non-district matches and tournaments give us an opportunity to assess our talent and see where the girls best fit in the scheme of play," said coach McGuire. "Soccer is a game with constant movement, so we need to have the players experience a certain comfort level in the various positions to improve in both halves of the field. I think we will have a better idea about our most effective lineup by the time we get to district play," reiterated coach McGuire.
