LadyCats Take Championship at LadySpartan Cup Tournament

January 13, 2014
By Jeff McGuire of Splendora High School

The LadyCat Soccer Team took top honors at the LadySpartan Cup held in Stafford this weekend. The tournament was based on a points system with Houston Reagan, Splendora, and Stafford in the red bracket and Brookshire Royal, Houston Lee, and Palacious in the gold bracket. The LadyCats tied the host Stafford LadySpartans on Friday night 2-2. Scoring goals for the LadyCats were seniors Nataly Chavez and Melissa Parker. Parker's goal was especially impressive as it came on a set piece from 30 yards away from goal. Her arcing shot went just out of the goalie's reach as she scored the equalizer with just over 7 minutes to play.

On Saturday morning, the LadyCats took on Houston Reagan. Because of the tie from the previous evening, Splendora needed to win with a 3-0 shutout to advance to the championship round. Thanks to goals from Sam Rouse, Paola Ramos, and Emily Richardson, and stellar goalkeeping from senior Stormy Dain, the LadyCats netted the 3-0 win. There were also outstanding performances from the senior trio of Kaylea Cook, Mallory Gomez, and Becca Smith on defense. Junior Fernanda Vasquez put in several quality minutes on both defense and offense.

Houston Lee won the gold bracket, so the LadyCats faced them in the championship match. Lee was a very big, strong, and physical team, but fortunately, the LadyCats rose to the challenge. Many times the LadyCats were able to out-finesse their opponent by using their speed and passing ability. While there were several shots on goal at both ends of the field, the match remained scoreless until sophomore captain Sam Rouse scored the lone goal with just over 2 minutes remaining in the match. Junior attacker Sandra Castillo and senior midfielder Emily Richardson also were instrumental in maintaining control of the ball throughout the match.

An all tournament team was named based on voting by the coaches. Congratulations go to Tournament MVP Sam Rouse and the following  All-Tournament players: seniors Emily Richardson, Nataly Chavez, Becca Smith, Melissa Parker, and Stormy Dain, junior Sandra Castillo, and sophomore Paola Ramos.

The LadyCats take their 2-0-1 record into their next match against Diboll on Tuesday, January 14th at Wildcat Stadium. The JV match starts at 5:00pm and the varsity match kicks off at 7:00. Come on out to support Splendora LadyCat soccer!
