2014 Willis Cat Cup

January 11, 2014
By Tim Gillespie of Splendora High School

The Wildcat boy's Varsity soccer team completed the Willis Cat Cup tournament Friday and Saturday with two strong showings against two strong opponents.  On Friday the Kats took on the C E King Panthers.  The Panthers took the early lead 1-0 and the score stood up until late in the second half when Aberaham Lopez beat the Panther goalkeeper on a penalty kick to tie the score at 1 apiece. Playing inspired soccer C E King had to fight off the Wildcats in the last few minutes of the match to salvage a 1-1 tie.

In the final match on Saturday, the Wildcats took on 5-A powerhouse, the Bryan High School Vikings. Bryan took the lead by a count of 4-1 before the "never say die" Wildcats mounted yet another fantastic finish.  Jorge Garcia scored his 2nd goal of the afternoon and Daniel Ulgarte scored once to bring the score to 4-3 with three  minutes left in the match.  The Wildcats tried but could not tie the score, but it was an inspired finish.  Jorge Garcia and Saul Soria were named to the all-tournament team.  Great showing guys!!  The Wildcats next match is Tuesday at New Caney.
